Welcome to Sanford Friedman Fotography.

My photography career began in 1968 when cameras were manual and film choices were pretty limited. This required me to understand how exposure and lighting affects the photographic image. Until I went digital in 2009, I mainly shot slide film that has least forgiveness for incorrect exposures.

I started out by doing nature, travel, and scenic photography. Over time my repertoire expanded to close-up photography, cityscapes and street scenes, abstracts and distortions, architecture, reflections, and photographs for businesses. I have also done my share of event photography either as a paid photographer or a guest with a camera. My site includes images from 1968 to present. I shoot digital in RAW format and do post-processing work on those images. I am conservative and judicious in its use, believing the best pictures are still composed in the camera.

Photography for me is a way of being conscious of the world around me—of the quality of light, objects, people, shapes, patterns, colors, and textures. It forces me to use my eyes and imagination. I also seek to see things in new ways. A good photograph is one that is more than an exact replication of what is seen; it evokes emotion. I like to think of myself as iconoclastic, looking for new ways to see things.

Thank you for stopping by my site. I am always interested in meeting and/or shooting with other photographers. If you are going to be in the Bay Area, let me know. I can be contacted at
